Statement on Sen. David Vitter

The statement by my friend and former colleague, Louisiana Senator David Vitter, was very disappointing. He admitted to a “serious sin” in a statement he released to the press on Monday, prior to news reports revealing that his phone number appeared on a long list of client’s numbers of the now infamous DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey.

In the release David assumed complete responsibility for what he did and that he “asked for and received forgiveness from God and [his] wife in confession and marriage counseling.” These allegations first surfaced about 4 or 5 years ago when David was considering running for governor of Louisiana. He backed away from the race admitting to marital problems and he and his wife sought counseling. This public revelation coincides with that time frame.

While I commend him on assuming personal responsibility and working to make things whole in his life, I cannot defend David’s behavior. Adultery is a serious matter that affects not only the individuals involved but families and the well being of the entire community. Voters have the right to consider issues like this when they assess the character of an elected official.

Having said that, the American people have shown themselves to be very forgiving toward a public official who admits their failures and takes redemptive steps. And despite what some have said since he released his statement, so does God. Proverbs 24:16 reads “For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity.” I hope to see David back on his feet again.

We are a forgiving people.....especially when one comes forth on their own.

But he did not!!!!

If he didn't get outed he would not have said anything....but when you get caught with your hand in the nooky jar, apologizing is easy.

If he was a class act he would step down.

As for his wife being like Lorena Bobbit instead of Mrs. Clinton(talk is cheap!)tell her i will be the first to give her a pinking shears or a serrated blade whatever she desires.

Why is it that the worst, slimiest scum are the ones who holler the loudest when a person of integrety errors. Next we will probably hear Teddy Kennedy, in all his self righteousness climb on the dog pile and condem Sen. Vitter. Your quote of Proverbs 24:16 was right on the mark. However, people should (especially the slime) also consider the words of Jesus in the eighth chapter of John regarding the woman who was caught in the very act of adultry; John 8:7......he that is without sin among you,let him first cast a stone at her. And then in John 8:11.......neither do I condemn thee; go, and sin no more. Of course, this is just one of many examples of God's forgiveness to the repentant sinner.

[watcher in la] says:

He did not own up to his "sin" until he was told it was going to be made public. I find it hard to follow how you can brush over Vitter's continuous visitation with prostitutes in New Orleans and DC. There are no reliable, true media sources anymore. Is that what you call defending family and faith? I am a fan of your beliefs but find this very disappointing.

[Butch Reynolds] says:

He could be the worst crack addict, mama hater or homo and he is still the best senator we've elected since reconstruction. Thanks

[Maudie Johnson] says:

Before you throw Vitter overboard, make certain you have a '94' American Conservative Union replacement that can win. Mary Landrieu has a '20' rating. The way she votes says she's on Larry Flynt's side.
A hypocrite in Washington is someone who campaigns one way to get elected, then votes the other way once in office. Whatever Vitter has done, his traditional family values VOTING record stands. Short of perfection, I'll take the voting record.

[Shane] says:

Had the Senator's secret lifestyle not been exposed, it would have remained just that: a secret. He had no intention of admitting to this. It was only after realizing that his lifestyle was going to be out in the open that he decided to "admit" to it and try to put it in the best possible light (if that is possible).

Mr Perkins, to say that Sen. Vitter has "assumed responsibility" is being mighty generous. Last I heard, prostitution is illegal for both parties involved. Ms. Palfrey has been held accountable for her actions. It is now time for Sen. Vitter to assume COMPLETE responsibility for his involvement in this crime. It is time for Sen. Vitter to resign his seat and turn himself in to law enforcement authorities.

In the Washington Update I received last evening, you said that Sen Vitter's actions present an "opportunity to say that those who advocate for traditional moral values are hypocrites". No, no, no. Those who advocate for traditional moral values AND TRY TO LEGISLATE THOSE VALUES ON OTHERS WHILE FAILING TO ADHERE TO THOSE SAME VALUES are the hypocrites. Those of us who advocate for moral values AND practice those moral values are not hypocrites. Those of us who have moral failings and DO NOT ADVOCATE for others to follow moral values that we ourselves cannot follow are not hypocrites. Please don't include the rest of us with the true hypocrites.

[Cathy in B.R.] says:

Why do people feel he owed a public airing of his sin before being "forced" to? It was between him and his wife and God, and it sounds like he had already made his peace with them. If people are expecting public confessions from public people, maybe they are putting their faith in man instead of God.

[Andy] says:

Nowhere do you note that patronizing prostitutes is currently illegal in most American jurisdictions. It may be that Vitter benefits from limitation statutes, but the reality remains that he PAID women for sex. Thus we know that Senator Vitter is not only a hypocrite, jumping on the conservative bandwagon to win elections, but he is also a lawbreaker.

[Bobby Ed] says:

The Bush Administration opposes providing HIV-prevention services to workers in the sex trade, putting them, their customers, and their customers’ spouses at risk of what remains an incurable disease. Does Sen. Vitter think he and his wife deserve to get AIDS from his interactions with prostitutes? If not, would he like to reconsider his support for that policy?

[Good As You] says:

Tony, this is truly going to make you look bad with folks on both sides. It would seem you are letting your personal relationship get in the way of your views.

[Jenn] says:

Frank and "watcher in la" - I disagree and completely and agree with Cathy. This was between him and his wife and God! He resolved it long ago between them. Moreover, a sin is a sin in God's eyes. A lie today or tomorrow is just as bad as Vitter's sin in God's eyes. Who are we to cast stones when we are all a sinful people? This is an issue for God to deal with, not man.

[Jenn] says:

I wanted to add that I think Tony is right - adultery is a serious matter and even though we are a sinful people, we deserve the right to take these things into consideration at the polls. I also hope to see David back on his feet.

[Bobby Ed] says:

Here's what Senator Vitter said in an op-ed in the Times-Picayune in 1998:

"Some current polls may suggest that people are turned off by the whole Clinton mess and don’t care — because the stock market is good, the Clinton spin machine is even better or other reasons. But that doesn’t answer the question of whether President Clinton should be impeached and removed from office because he is morally unfit to govern."

If extra-marital sex makes one unfit to govern, what about criminal extra-marital sex? Every day Senator Vitter stays in office is more proof of his own hypocrisy.

[John] says:

I always assumed that Gay marriages would destroy traditional marriages, but, it looks like conservatives are helping,I am ashamed of hypocrites that say the right things but do otherwise. At least Sen. Vitter is not Gay, or an illegal alien or something really bad like a democrat. Please give this man an opportunity to become president. He is on our side.

[Brian] says:

Sounds like Vitter was just really into hookers.

I find it strange that this man's personal and legal transgressions immediately lead to preemptive and reactionary criticism of OTHERS. Vitter's penchant for prostitutes should not inspire a biblically-based diatribe against Senator Kennedy.

In my opinion, whoring it up while married reveals a weak character and stains the soul. I hope Vitter loses the primary, I have no desire to see a general election about purchasing women for sexual exploit, there are too many other things worth talking about.

[Suricou Raven] says:

He will be fine. He can just pull the old 'new man' trick. All it takes is an announcement that he is a new man, repents of his sin, and has found forgiveness in Christ. Religious conservatives are suckers for the forgiveness in Christ line. Remember Foley, that senator caught flirting online with underaged male pages? Last I heard from him, he had announced that God had 'cured' his homosexuality. I recall Perkins made a publication at the time welcoming him back to the flock of trustworthy campaigners for the lord, as if nothing had happened.

As for the prostitution, I find it interesting that no charges are being pressed against him, despite the fact that soliciting the services of a prostitute is very much illegal - and he has already admitted guilt. Yet the 'DC Madam' is being prosecuted. I don't know if this is because of some behind-the-scenes favors or merely because the police consider his crime too minor, but there is grounds for suspicion of the former.

[dangerblond] says:

Excuse me, but this is not between Mr. and Mrs. Vitter and God. When the little people like most reading this blog get caught committing a crime, it is most certainly not between us, our spouses and God. I believe men who are convicted of soliciting prostitution even get put on the public sex offender list. As for Vitter, it is very much your and my business if we have a hypocritical sex addict as one of our TWO US Senators. He has fooled you more than he has fooled me, because I never voted for him.

[Patrick] says:

I hope David gets back on his feet but ....he only admitted his sin when he was going to be 'outed'. He deserves forgiveness, but his hypocracy means he SHOULD be forgiven by his god and his family but NOT BE a US Senator. What's good enough for the goose is good enough for the gander. We tore apart Clinton who was a cheater but now we can't complain about a senator who frequented a prostitute which is illegal ?? Lets at least be consistent in our indignation.

God bless

[A liberal libertarian] says:

Isn't it interesting, not just Mr. Vitter's hypocrisy, but the hypocrisy of his supporters? Personally, I have no problem with what Mr. Vitter did, except 1) it is a crime, and 2) he is the penultimate hypocrite.
If a person wants to purchase sex, it should be between those two people and their God, if either has one. If they don't, so be it. But it's Mr. Vitter and his religious sect which will make sure the oldest profession remains illegal. OK, so if you make the rules, you gotta paly by them, too!
Secondly, Mr. Vitter was voted into office on his holier-than-thou principles. It was hewho threw the stone at Mr. Clinton through is only paper-thin glass window. Unfortunately for him, the window wasn't open, and he's walking around barefoot on the glass he created.
If we Louisianans stand for this, we deserve to continue to be the political laughingstock of this nation.
