Trying to get something from nothing

Q: Why are there so few Buddhist rhythm and blues bands?
A: Because Buddhists don't have any soul.

Some Evangelicals are doing some unusual, but interesting, outreach.

Evangelicals hope to 'reach' Buddhists
Workshops coincide with Dalai Lama visit

If you're a Tibetan Buddhist or you're leaning that way, you may not know it, but you need Jesus.

That's the thinking behind a series of Christian evangelical workshops -- including one later this month in Wheaton -- that will coincide with the Dalai Lama's trip to Chicago and other American cities this spring.

The Dalai Lama is set to visit Chicago in May. A Philadelphia-based Christian missionary group is holding a series of workshops on how to share the gospel with Tibetan Buddhists.

Interserve USA is putting on the workshops to teach Christians how to talk to Buddhists and, perhaps, to win converts. More . . .

And in case I haven’t offended Richard Gere yet:

Q: Why don't Buddhists vacuum in the corners?
A: Because they have no attachments.

[Scott] says:

Wow, calling people of a different faith "soul-less".

How Christian of you.

[Tom] says:

I'll try to work from the assumption that while you might have a soul it apparently is bereft of a sense of humor.

As with all wonderful philosophies, Buddhism is a bit paradoxical. As you probably don’t know, Buddhists don't believe in re-incarnation, but rather re-birth. This is because in Buddhism, a belief in reincarnation would be at odds with its primary basis – be it in Anicca doctrine which states there is nothing that is permanent and survives death or the Anatta doctrine in which there is no ultimate self. In fact Anatta is translated under various labels: No-soul, No-self, egolessness, and soullessness. So while I believe Buddhists have a soul, most of them do not feel the same way as I. Feel free to correct me my Buddhist education comes from having befriended a Buddhist Monk neighbor and having watched the Simpson’s episode where Lisa converts to Buddhism (and in which Richard Gere guest starred.)
