This event was well-attended and certainly the first of its kind in a long time on Barnard's decidedly pro-abortion campus. It was organized by an ad hoc group of alumni along with the student organization Columbia Catholics for Life. If anyone would like more information, please send me an e-mail. Just seven Congressmen out of 485 members born after the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision. Seven voices for an inconvenient generation. Some baby boomers have hailed abortion on demand as a great triumph for women’s rights, others have accepted it as a necessary evil, and still others have fought to see the end of abortion. Regardless of their pro-choice or pro-life beliefs, 99% of those currently serving on Capitol Hill share one thing in common: their lives were never a choice. They never faced the doctor’s scalpel. This 99% will never know what it is like to have one out of every three members of your generation selectively executed. To know that 1/3 of your classmates, teammates, and friends are missing, victims of a holocaust of convenience. If it hasn’t occurred to you yet, we are the first generation of Americans to be deemed “optional.” Dr. Yoest is correct—a sea change is coming in the abortion debate. In a little more than a decade, members of the inconvenient generation will make up a majority in Congress. And they will choose to stop the killing, some how, some way. Because to these “optional” Americans, abortion is much more than fodder for lectures, it is a pestilence handed to us by our forbears. One that we do not intend to pass on to our own children.
