Here's today's Washington Watch Daily commentary from FRC Radio:
A picture may be worth a thousand words--but it could also be worth a thousand lives. At least that's what Chris Slattery is counting on. For years, he's used ultrasound machines in crisis pregnancy centers to persuade women not to have abortions. In 22 years, he says more than 8,000 women have decided to keep their babies because of the technology. Now his group, Expectant Mother Care, is using a motor home with an ultrasound machine to drive the pro-life message home. Next month, he plans to park the unit in front of New Jersey's biggest abortion clinic. The idea has upset groups like Planned Parenthood. After all, ignorance has been bliss for the abortion industry. In their opinion, the less women see of their babies, the better. But if moms have a right to choose, then they also have a right to know all the facts. Usually, what you see is what you get. And in this case, that's a life!

I point out that Planned Parenthood offers its own ultrasound service. Its a standard procedure before all their surgical abortions - safety check, to see if there might be any complications. I dont know if its standard on medical abortions.
The difference here is that PPs service is very clinical - they have a professional look at the pictures, judge it on purely medical grounds, just to see if there is anything he needs to know. If the patient wants to see, I expect she can, on request - but the operator isn't going to do more than point out the various pieces of anatomy. The Slattery approach is not a medical scan - its purely for emotional impact, designed to induce guilt and shame. The presenter - even if they are trained in interpreting the images (which I doubt), im not going to dignify them by calling them a professional - will show the woman this image and start using emotionally laden terms: This is 'your baby' or 'your child.'
